Perrysburg Schools Adopt Children Group Homes in Hungary

On this year's
Make a Difference Day, Perrysburg Schools have decided to adopt children group homes in Veszprem County, Hungary, which is currently developing Sister County ties with Wood County, Ohio. Together with students of Fort Meigs Elementary, Perrysburg Jr. High and High School, the children have prepared gift packages to send to children in Hungary for the holiday season.

Five teachers of different Perrysburg Schools (Mr. Stan George, Mrs. Susan Harmon, Ms. Kathy Wohlever, Mr. Craig Krueger and Ms. Kate Philabaum, Mr. Peter Kramp and Mrs. Kathy Parent) were responsible for collecting the gifts and empty shoeboxes before October 28th, 2000. The gifts were not expensive and included like-new items that American students may have had at home but could not or did not use. The gifts were matched with an appropriate Hungarian student's description, then packed and wrapped together with a Christmas card in the box. After all the gift boxes were filled, a truckload of items still remained. These were picked up by a representative of the Toledo-Szeged Committee, who delivered them to Csongrad County's children in Hungary.
Perrysburg students were also asked to write their memories and comments regarding this project. Students continued to work on making a CD of their favorite music, which will be sent to schools in Hungary and Ukraine when completed. Mr. Phil Smith, Music teacher of Perrysburg Schools coordinated the project.

School Supplies from Bowling Green to Ukraine

Bowling Green Junior High School did not formally sign up to do the Consortium's
Make a Difference Day project. However, the whole school and Student Council helped to collect some items for distribution overseas. They collected pens, pencils, some art supplies, including paper, markers, paints, etc. as well as other school-related items. Many students were willing to donate in the spirit of giving. The items were donated to The Anastasia Fund, which will be shipped to students in Ukraine. Ms. Rhonda Durney, Social Studies teacher  coordinated the project.

Candy Drive at Birmingham Schools

Mr. Tom Csizek and Mr. Steve Wagner, teachers at the Birmingham School in Toledo, asked their students to contribute a candy bar or a pack of gum for the Christmas project that the Toledo-Szeged Committee is organizing as a celebration of the 10th year anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Toledo and Szeged (Hungary). "The candy drive was successful and we had a larger box of candy that students brought in to help. Many forgot and scrambled to get some candy so they could contribute. It was so nice to see some of my students, who normally cause some problems, give out of the kindness in their hearts," comments Mr. Steve Wagner, teacher.

424 pairs of Shoes Donated by Wauseon

A goodwill project has been established at the Elm Street Elementary School in order to help their students to be a part of Make a Difference Day. Students were asked to collect as many pairs of shoes as possible for the people of the Ukraine. The students impressed everyone as they responded by collecting 424 pair of shoes. "This program has helped our students to be more aware of the needs of others around the world. It has been created an awareness that we are very fortunate to have the many special things that we do," says Ms Sherryann Franks, teacher at Elm Street Ele
